Spain's Digital Nomad Visa for Americans: Who It's For and How It Works

The most accessible long-term route to Spain for remote workers: income requirements, who qualifies, family, and the tax question.

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa for Americans: Who It's For and How It Works

Spain's Digital Nomad Visa (part of the 2023 Startup Act) was created for people who work remotely for companies outside Spain. For an American with a U.S. employer or U.S. clients, it's usually the most accessible long-term route to living in Spain.

Who qualifies

  • You work remotely for a company (or clients) based outside Spain, either as an employee or as a freelancer.
  • Your employer or clients must allow remote work from Spain, and you'll typically need documentation from them.
  • Only a limited share of your work can be for Spanish companies.
  • You'll need a university degree or at least three years of relevant professional experience, plus a clean criminal record and private health insurance.

Income requirement

The minimum income is set as a multiple of Spain's minimum wage and is updated each year (currently in the region of €2,700 per month for the main applicant, with additional amounts for a spouse and children). Check the current figure before you apply; we'll confirm it on the call.

Family

Your spouse or partner and dependent children can be included in the application.

How long it lasts

The visa is granted for up to three years initially (one year if you apply from the U.S., then extended in Spain) and is renewable. Time on the DNV counts toward permanent residency, which becomes possible after five years of legal residence.

The tax question

DNV holders may be able to opt into Spain's special expat tax regime (the ''Beckham Law''), which taxes employment income at a flat rate for a limited period. Whether it helps depends on your income mix and how long you plan to stay, and the interaction with your U.S. taxes needs a cross-border professional.

Apply from the U.S. or from Spain?

You can apply at a Spanish consulate in the U.S. or, if you're in Spain legally as a visitor, directly in Spain (the latter is often faster and grants a longer initial permit). Which route suits you depends on your timing.
