Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa in 2026: The Honest American Guide
A common residency route for retirees in Spain: how the income requirement works at a high level, who it tends to fit, and the mistakes that derail US applicants.

Spain's Non-Lucrative Visa (visado no lucrativo) is the most common route Americans use to settle in Spain in retirement. It permits residence without working, but the financial bar, paperwork, and consulate-specific quirks trip up more applicants than the law itself.
What it is
A one-year residence permit (renewable, leading to permanent residence in 5 years and citizenship in 10) for non-EU nationals with sufficient passive income or savings to support themselves without working in Spain.
The 2026 income threshold
Spain ties the threshold to the IPREM. For 2026 you need approximately: • Main applicant: 400% of IPREM monthly (roughly $33,000–34,000 USD per year) • Each dependent: an additional 100% (roughly $8,300 per dependent)
Most consulates want to see this as either steady documented income (pension, Social Security, rental, annuities) OR a year of income in savings. Mixing the two usually works, but the documentation must be airtight.
What kills American applications
- Apostilles done wrong. Every document issued in the US (FBI background check, marriage certificate, birth certificate) must carry an Apostille from the state department that issued it. Federal docs need a US State Department Apostille (a different, slower process).
- FBI background check timing. It must be less than 90 days old at the consulate appointment. Plan backward.
- Health insurance that is not Spanish. US-based travel insurance is rejected. You need a Spanish-licensed private policy with no co-pays, no deductibles, and no waiting periods for the full year.
After arrival
Within 30 days of entering Spain you must apply for the TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) and register at your town hall (empadronamiento). Get these two done in week one: the rest of life depends on them.
