Second Home, Retirement Home or New Life? Ways to Own in Spain
Owning a home in Spain doesn't have to mean moving there, at least not yet. The different ways Americans own here, and what each one asks of you.

People arrive at the idea of owning a home in Spain from very different places. Some want a base by the sea for a few months a year. Some are buying the house they'll retire to in five years. Some are moving now and want to own rather than rent. The right home (and the right area, and the right timing) depends on which of these you are.
A second home for part of the year
You keep your life in the U.S. and add Spain to it: a few weeks in spring, the long light of September, maybe a winter month away from the cold. What matters here is ease. An airport within reach, a place that's pleasant when you're there and simple to look after when you're not, a community that doesn't empty out completely off-season. Coastal towns and mid-sized cities tend to work well. Note that as a U.S. citizen you can spend up to 90 days in any 180-day period in Spain without a visa, enough for most second-home rhythms.
The home you'll retire to
Some buy years before they move, letting the house become familiar on visits before it becomes home. Here it pays to think about the life you'll actually live there: walkability, healthcare nearby, a town that works in February as well as July, a property that suits you at 75 as well as at 60. Regions with mild winters (the Mediterranean coast, Andalusia, Valencia) are popular for exactly these reasons.
Owning as part of a move
If you're relocating now, the question is whether to buy immediately or rent first. Many people rent for a period to learn a city before committing to a neighborhood; others know exactly where they want to be. Both are reasonable. Buying does not by itself grant residency, so the visa route runs alongside the purchase, not through it.
Village, town, city or coast
The same budget buys very different lives in different places. A restored village house inland. An apartment in a walkable city center. A townhouse a few streets from the sea. Before comparing properties, compare the life each place offers on an ordinary Tuesday: it's the surest way to choose well.
